FBI UCR Homicide Data — 521 recorded incidents across 21 cities

State Overview
Alabama consistently ranks among the states with the highest per-capita homicide rates in the United States. The violence is concentrated in Birmingham, Mobile, and the rural Black Belt region, where deep poverty, limited economic opportunity, and a legacy of racial violence have created conditions for persistent lethal crime. Alabama's criminal justice system — which has one of the highest per-capita incarceration rates in the world — has done little to deter homicide, which remains elevated despite massive investment in prisons. The state also has a dark history with racial terrorism: the 1963 Birmingham church bombing, which killed four young girls, remains one of the most notorious crimes in American history. FBI UCR data powers The Murder Channel's Alabama coverage.
